Treason Season 1 Episode No 5 Recap
When he mentions Kirby, Audrey changes her mind and agrees to meet him. Mads tells Audrey that it was Adam who tipped her off, but even if Audrey won, Martin would use this as leverage against her. Audrey decides to help Adam, even if it goes against her morals. Malik meets Adam, who tells him the whole truth about Martin and his insidious plans.
Adam believes that Malik is a responsible person who can run the service in the best way among the current agents. He gives Adam Olamide's location in Silvertown. Mads stays with the kids while Kara and Adam go to get the papers. While waiting, Adam apologizes to Kara for leaving him in Baku and for not keeping his promise. As Adam goes with the gun to check the rest of the yard, Kara sees Zoe start shredding files.
Adam finds Mads hiding near the containers. Apparently he had come to see if Adam needed help. Kara walks in and reads the file. He may know who 'Dorian', a double agent in MI6, is. In the ensuing fight, he kills Olamide and Mads retires the driver.
The man leads a group of CIA agents who come to the yard. Grandfather takes Adam to gunpoint and threatens to kill him. He once again offers Mads a deal. Adam tries to convince Grandpa about Martin, but he won't listen. Maddie runs to Nanny to give her a ride and Adam tries to take her gun but he kills her. Adam was eliminated...
Martin tells Patrick and Malik about Adam. He sees them as "pretenders" for the deputy seat and asks them to accompany him to the meeting of the Intelligence Committee the next day. Mads informs Audrey of Adam's death, but now the minister backs out of the deal. He asks Mads to return the car to Martin and advises Mads to save his family now. When Mads says he will take the children to Madrid where his family is, Kara asks Mads to stay behind, expose Martin and protect his family. Kara tells Mads that the Man couldn't have been Dorian because the men were with her the night she was killed by Dorian.
Mads is inside the building and walks towards the cell where he is being held. She meets Patrick outside the door, seeing the papers and lies that Adam promised to give them. He is Dorian. He walks in and Audrey sees him walking in with the papers. He takes the dice and continues until his end of the deal. He exposes Martin's intelligence memory in front of everyone. Audrey praises Adam for being a hero to the nation for rooting out the treason poisoning Great Britain.
Mads confronts Martin and informs him that Patrick is Dorian, not Adam. In his greed for power, he alienated the real enemy. On her way out, Kara runs into Patrick, who calls the Russian operator and explains the situation. He finds a photo of Kara and his men in Baku and realizes that it was poisoned.
A news flash informs us that Martin has been arrested. Mads calls Dade and threatens to make it public that he is trying to collude with Martin. Kara now says goodbye to Mads, who has the difficult task of explaining to her children what happened to their father and raising them on her own. Ella and Callum fall into his arms when they see him coming towards them alone.
Episode Review
Why did the writers have to spoil everything at the end? Betrayal was going really well before episode 5. But the finale certainly overshadowed all the good work done up to that point. Patrick being Dorian was dull. There was no backstory on how this happened or why he was motivated to do it. There are no flashbacks to show how he betrayed the country.
While they did kill off Ada, which was a brave touch, they didn't give us enough closure about her family's grief. It all felt very emotional in the end. Malick felt completely drained, and he was one of those unwitting red herrings that the writers ended up grabbing. Everything felt in place, and after the first half of episode 4, fears were realized: Betrayal is mediocre at best.
