When Adam gets to his office, he learns that Martin has fired him. Episode 4 of The Betrayal then sees Mads go to Dada with the news that it's been done. He once again insists that Mads leave this mess, but he challenges his position for the sake of the children.
Audrey's news spread. Maryam is shocked to hear the accusations against Adam. Martin assures Mary that he won't hurt Ella and Callum to find out where Adam is taking them. He tells them about his holiday home in Surrey.
Martin v. Melnikov and Adam gives section 7 (treason). Now he is considered a threat to national security. Martin orders Adam killed and plans to blame it on Kara. Rus takes the conversation between Martin and Olamide and finds the address. Mads is also in charge because the CIA is involved. He comes home and tells Adam about the truth. Melnikov is stabbed by an unknown person in the parking lot.
Patrick leaves Adam a message asking what happened and tells him that Melnikov is dead. Adam tells Mads that he gave him the file on Audrey that started all this for the family. A sniper is camping outside the house taking aim, we're now at the start of the series. He is most likely the one who killed Melnikov, but the nature of his allegiance is unclear.
Mads is angry at Adam for betraying this country and putting the family at risk. The man says that he has worked to get the families of those killed in Baku, as he promised to Kara. Ella gets up and listens to the conversation. Adam admits that he left Gara in Baku because he was afraid that their relationship would be revealed and that he would not be able to take credit for the intelligence. It was never about love, it was about guilt. He apologizes to Mads, but he's confused about how Adam can be exonerated for giving official state secrets to a former Russian spy.
At this point, Adam tells him that the information is unofficial and was collected by Martin himself. Something outside catches Callum's attention and a sniper is locked on him, but Kara brings him inside and tells Adam that Martin ordered him to shoot. The man outside is indeed his man and acts independently of MI6. He also killed Martin Melnikov. The sniper fires but misses. They turn off the lights and now Kara must protect Adam if she wants to prove her innocence.
He stays with the kids and Mads and Kara go to deal with him. Kara will be distracted and Mads will take her down. The gunner sees Kara and flies after her. Mads comes at him from behind. The Hun shooter dies of his wounds and is buried in the forest. They all leave together.
Adam takes them all to Kit's house. She is revealed to be Sian, Adam's dead ex-wife and best friend. He's a lawyer and the only person Adam can trust right now. Callum innocently asks Adam if they are good people and he says yes. Mads is traumatized by killing the shooter. He admits that he has not killed anyone outside the army. When Olamide informs Martin that Adam is gone, Martin calls Dada for help. The man must publicly remove Martin's depravity before the election.
Kara suggests that the only way out is to make a deal with Audrey and gain immunity. Kit approves. Adam and Kara go after the files and Mads will go to Audrey for the deal. Martin gives Deda the all-clear to eliminate Adam and Black, and in return agrees to prove to him that Adam has been a double agent since Baku, which will give him enough clout in Langley. The same thing Black did with Adam!
Episode Review
The moment we go back to where the series started is in episode 4. Martin has been portrayed as the terrifying villain we all hate in such spy dramas. These nefarious figures sit back and dictate terms, bending the rules at their whim to achieve ulterior motives.
But perhaps characterization was essential to create a fleshed-out portrait for Ciaran Hinds. How could they let his talent go to waste like this? Mads brought out his A-game and renewed his acquaintance with his military training, albeit under strange and compelling circumstances. Oona Chaplin is so underrated and she was brilliant in this episode.
It was a little weird for the kids to watch him team up with Kara. Was she a woman with whom her husband was in love - and perhaps still is - and entrusts her family life to him? Unfortunately, the ending was too predictable and we now know how it ends. Dorian's mystery remains intact, so let's hope they do something with his avenue!
