Emily in Paris Season 3
Episode No 9 Recap And Review
Gabriel meets with Antoine shortly later that day to discuss "trying to upgrade the restaurant" and tells him that he needs a Michelin star as well as a raise. Antoine isn't immediately sure, but says he'll think about it.
Emily breaks the news to Mindy about Alfie as they go out for coffee that same day. He expresses concern that he hasn't told his parents about their relationship, but Mindy advises him to stand firm. Additionally, Mindy is furious with Emily and tells her that she chose the job because of what happened at the Cadault place. After Emily apologizes, he forgives her and sends her an invitation to celebrate at a music venue as she is about to quit.
That evening, Emily and Alfie are at Gabriel's bar, and he asks her for help with a project for their latest client, who wants to feature the couple for a campaign. Gabriel walks in and tells Camille that he intends to propose. "I'm so happy for you," Emily practically screams after finding out. Furthermore, Emily is in a difficult position when Alfie suggests using Camille and Gabriel in the initiative. Although Gabriel is intrigued by the idea, he first goes to the kitchen to think about it.
Just a few hours later, he responds positively to Emily's late-night text, and they decide to meet the next morning to look at potential locations for both a proposal and an advertisement.
As they are sightseeing, Emily asks Gabriel if Camille made him want to get married after he got back from Greece. Gabriel is quite secretive, telling Emily that he and Camille are beginning to open up to each other in a way they haven't before, and that the chef he met in Provence, whom he saw with his diner and children, was the inspiration behind his decision.
The next day at Sylvie's firm, Julien, Luc, and Sylvie have lunch together, and Julien is upset that Emily chose a pair for the ad that was run by her client instead of her. Deciding to invite himself to dinner, Luc is horrified to see soup all over Julien's face.
Meanwhile, at Gabriel's diner, Antoine and Alfie inform him that he will not be getting a higher salary, but rather that Gabriel will get a share of the business and have additional control, continuing to make Antoine his silent partner. That's enough for Gabriel, who sends a message to Camille to tell her the big news. The two hold hands at the Musée d'Orsay, where they reminisce about their old history when they pretended to be lovers.
Immediately after stealing Gabriel's words, Camille asks him a question. She says yes, calls Emily to share the good news, and says, "I hope this doesn't mess anything up for you." Unfazed, Emily ends the call and returns to the discussion with Julien's client. He declares that the couple is no longer compatible, gives a long speech about creating and marketing love, and then advises couples to fly in hot air balloons rather than get a real-time proposal. Everyone agrees with this stupid idea, except for Julien, who is furious with Emily.
Right after the discussion, Sylvie gets a call from her mother, who informs us that it's Sylvie's anniversary and asks what she has planned for the evening. After they made up, Sylvie wanted to go to the opera with Laurent, but he was going to work at his St. Tropez club.
Sylvie goes to the opera alone and is surprised to see Laura there too. He explains that he decided to come as soon as he remembered it was her anniversary, which impresses him.
The scene quickly shifts to Mindy's party, where Emily tries to reconcile with Nicholas, who refuses to forgive her. He reacts by telling Mindy that he'll "just leave" when she apologizes for the Emily Cadault debacle, effectively kicking her out of the gathering. Instead of fighting back, Emily puts her friend's happiness before her own, which doesn't work because Mindy is upset when Emily is forced to make up an excuse for a work dinner, only to leave when Nicholas tells her to.
Having already upset not only Nicola, but also her best friend and housemate, Emily tackles the situation with Alfie outdoors. By not telling her family about him, she takes out more of her unhappiness on him and adds to her already intense resentment. His reasoning is that his attempts to introduce girlfriends to his parents had never worked out well.
Alfie is delighted when Emily says "I'm not going anywhere" and wants to introduce her to his people. However, Emily considers a more dreamy option. He then suggests that they take part in a hot air balloon commercial and publicize their relationship.
Episode Review
The episode retains an element of normalizing cheating. The episode starts with Emily getting upset that she didn't tell her parents about him, and we later see her bring it up again and she agrees to tell her parents about him. This aspect of the plot feels extremely cheesy because we know that Emily still has feelings for Gabriel and that Alfie is delusional in convincing her to tell her parents about him.
At this point, it feels like the storyline is dragging a bit too much and they try to hold off on getting Emily and Gabriel together to keep the audience interested, but the storyline beats around the bush in the process. , and the element of drama came up a lot.
