Emily in Paris Season 3

Episode No 8 Recap And Review

The tone of Emily in Paris continues to be dark in episode 8 as the Grateau staff walk through some kind of garden in black. They discuss Pierre Cadault as if the designer is probably dead after the mysterious turning point at the end of the previous episode. In a surprising turn of events, he is still alive and they visit him in the hospital and do not take him to his final resting place.

Sylvie tries to avoid discussing the case with Kadault during her conversation, unaware that she is about to be fired from her label and replaced by Gregory. He sets up a meeting with Gregory while Grateau is still at work. He seems a bit disappointed and upset that Kadault is still alive. As soon as he talks about his past, we have to sympathize with him. Gregory confirms that he was previously caught on camera "enjoying the outdoors" and was later given the nickname "Gag-ory" by Cadault, who coined the popular and harmful term when interacting with the media.

When Emily visits Cadault, she calls Nicholas and asks him to hold off on introducing Gregory as leader of the line because Cadault is still in the hospital. He disagrees, so Emily informs Sylvie. Sylvie then prepares to speak with Louis de Leon, father of Nicolas and head of the JVMA, to resolve the matter on her own. He urges her to delay the official announcement so that Cadault can gracefully leave her brand, but she refuses, insisting that Nicolas will make the final decision.

Furthermore, she evades Sylvie's inquiries by claiming that she is now "zealous and beautiful" as her assistant. Skilled at playing games, Sylvie claims to "remember everything" to work with Louis, implying that she is creepy to him. After subtly blackmailing him, they reached an agreement, and he said he would hold off on the official announcement for now.

Later that evening, after Mindy's performance at the music venue, Emily, Mindy, and Nicolas appear to be chatting, and Nicolas confronts Emily about Sylvie's conversation with her father about delaying the Cadault updates. Nicolas is furious and tells Emily that it's her decision when and how to go public, and Emily then tries to leave him and Mindy alone.

As Emily returns, Gabriel texts her for a drink. He answers and finds her sitting by the river drinking Japanese whiskey. After seeing a photo of Camille with Sofia in Greece and several men at a club, she says she believes he is having an affair. She continues to reveal the information, telling Emily that she believes Camille never chose to forgive her. As soon as he lays eyes on Emily, he immediately tells her that he is in love with her.

When they communicate, Emily advises him to call a taxi and go home. Gabriel continues to drink whiskey in the back seat of the car and confesses his love for both Emily and Camille, but Emily gets him safely back to her apartment without making any drunken confessions.

The next day, Emily tells Sylvie that she is upset about Nicholas' discussion with his father and that she intends to make a press release with Gregory that evening. Sylvie realizes she needs to warn Cadault now, so she and Emily pay him a visit, and he's understandably upset.

Gregory is scheduled to take the Cadault throne that evening as he moves forward with the opening of the Cadault store. While there, Nicolas tries to patch things up with Emily. In order to sensationalize Kadault as an individual rather than just his label, he and Sylvie falsely claim that he is dead when he arrives at the location.

The tactic succeeds, and during the party, it is rumored that Kadault died later that day in the hospital. Cadault makes an appearance, correcting rumors of his death, by walking on a hologram of himself, shortly after the crowd's interest peaked at the headlines of his death.

Nicolas discovers that Sylvie is behind the rumor and tells her to leave, ending his relationship with her and his brand, but Sylvie can't be bothered. Sylvie claims that she is missing out on an opportunity she never wanted: a relationship with Louis de Leon. Sylvie and Emily immediately leave together, which could be problematic for Emily's relationship with Mindy, but potentially fruitful for her relationship with Sylvie.

The next day, Emily returns to her apartment and is confronted by Gabriel, who informs her that Camille returned yesterday. He's also happier than when we last saw him. Gabriel tells Emily that he's really happy and that they miss each other because Camille is sure he's not dating anyone.

  Episode Review

The episode begins on a dramatic note and the tone continues from the characters announcing that Kadault is dead to Pierre making a scene in the store. While a touch of drama serves to entertain—which is great—this episode is overdramatic, and it gets tiresome.

The drama here also promotes and normalizes the idea that it's not wrong to love two people, as we've seen throughout the show. In this episode, for example, Gabriel tells Emily that he loves both Emily and Camille. While it's great to have a show that presents an opposing point of view, there's only one here, and it's a morally dubious one.
