Emily in Paris Season 3
Episode No 5 Recap And Review
Outside the diner, Emily, Alfie and Mindy all find Nicholas. Mindy knows him from their boarding school in Switzerland together when they were in different grades. According to Nicholas, Mindy was involved in drug dealing when she was a student. Afterwards, Emily asks Nicholas to join them at a weekend party hosted by Alfie.
Emily is able to arrange a dinner with writer Janine DuBois from La Liste at Gabriel's diner with her and Sylvie. When Emily gets there, she is shocked to learn that Janie is Australian. The fact that Janie is not French shocks and disturbs Sylvie. After this, we witness how Emily gets along with Janine.
After dinner, the focus turns to Alfie's celebration, which is attended by several people, especially Nicholas. Emily rushes to talk about work, but is quickly silenced by the JVMA heiress who is there for Mindy. The moment he sees Emily, he tries to run away. Sophia, a Greek painter who happens to be there, asks Emily about Camille, who hasn't arrived.
Meanwhile, Mindy and Nicolas discuss. She starts complaining to Nikolay about street performances on the subway, and he seems more flirtatious than before. Benoit walks in, standing in the background as Mindy and Nicholas hug. The three of them engage in an awkward conversation until Nicholas gets the message and walks away, but not without asking them to join him at an upcoming event for JVMA to launch a sunscreen his firm is marketing.
Camille, who has just appeared at the event, stands with Sofia on the roof of Alfie's apartment and looks out over Paris below. Sofia leans in for a kiss and Camille relents as the two enjoy the passionate spectacle that blossoms between them.
Emily and Alfie head up the stairs as they want to get to the roof. After being shocked by Camille and Sofia walking in, he quickly closes the door firmly. The next day, during the JVMA party, she remembers what happened and tells Mindy how Camille got involved in an affair, but Mindy advises her to stop meddling in other people's lives.
Emily suggests that Nicholas include a piece of music written for Mindy by Benoit as an item in the Soleil De Paris promotion, and he agrees when he takes Mindy's cell phone and plays the music over the DJ's speakers. The people in the gathering start dancing and Nicholas expresses his surprise.
Mindy is ecstatic about the potential to help her boyfriend's career and can't wait to tell Benoit about it over drinks that evening. Unfortunately, she tells him that it's their song and she doesn't want it used in a sunscreen commercial.
Emily informs Nicolas that the track is banned and he doesn't seem concerned and tells her that she is interested in working with him for the Soleil De Paris promotion when she lands on La List. Emily is on the wish list and she is on the cover of the magazine featured there.
Sylvie's boyfriend, Eric, delivers the message to her in bed later that day, and she leaves, taking out her anger at work, yelling at Emily during the discussion. As Sylvie informs her that she is expected to advertise the agency, not her, Emily tries to remedy the situation by discussing JVMA's marketing proposal. Sylvie is reluctantly pleased, "good job" gushes.
Emily goes out drinking with Gabriel and Alfie that evening to celebrate her La Liste achievement, and is quickly joined by Camille, who steps in with Sofia.
Since Mindy is going to play with Benoit, she can't join Emily for celebratory cocktails. After Nicholas's flowers appear, things quickly get uncomfortable backstage. The gift upsets Benoit, who will accompany Mindy to the club that night. He fights her over her insecurities and she comments on how different their lives are.
Mindy leaves the locker room after refusing to show Benoit the card attached to her flowers. After he leaves, we learn that Nicholas invites Mindy to have dinner with him.
Despite leaving the dressing room, Benoit still takes the stage to perform a duet of "Shallow" from 'A Star Is Born' with Mindy. While having drinks with Emily, Alfie, and Gabriel, Mindy and Benoit perform as Sophia fondles Camille's leg under the table. As the crowd cheers at the end of the song, Mindy gets up to take a bow, only to find Benoit has already left the stage.
Episode Review
The episode maintains the show's usual tone and seems too implausible. The protagonist finds a solution before the problem arises, so there is no room for tension. For example, when Emily is tasked with getting Sylvie into La List, it just so happens that Janine follows her on Instagram before she even starts working on the assignment.
Another very romantic and fairytale-like aspect is the sequence where Emily introduces Benoit's piece of music for Mindy and the guests spontaneously start dancing and feeling it.
The episode also maintains its stereotypical style, with Sylvie initially finding Janie respectable and her following Emily surprising. But after meeting Janine, Sylvie is disappointed to discover that she is not French, but Australian. It's exhausting how often this show deals in over-the-top and pointless stereotypes.
The episode concludes with Mindy and Benoit arguing and Benoit leaving the stage after his performance. It seems like the show is trying to bring Nicholas and Mindy together, so Benoit is suddenly portrayed as a jealous and insecure boyfriend to get rid of her.
