The White Lotus HBO Series Season 2 episode 2 Recap and Review

Italian dream

The day starts pretty early in White Lotus season 2 episode 2. Ethan gets up and goes for a run like any millionaire. A long place where he goes deep into the city. At the exit, he also sees Lucia, who has just left the hotel.

The morning is warm, loving and surreal for Daphne and Cameron. They wake up together and hug. Harper, however, is a completely different story. He wakes up alone as Ethan hasn't returned from his run yet. Tanya and Greg are probably the weirdest. He seems to be hiding something, and when Tanya wakes up, she finds him sitting on the bed staring at something. He refuses, but something is not right.

Albie and Portia start eating together again (making three "accidental" dates so far) when the latter notices Tanya approaching. Although his father and grandfather are still there. Daphne and Cameron invite Harper to their desk, even though she wants to spend time alone with her book. The Di Grassos talk about the fight between Dominic and his wife. Bert invites Portia to a "Sicilian venture" and she reluctantly agrees. Daphne tells Harper that she and Cam never fight, which Harper finds strange. Her description of their relationship was too good to be believed - even for us.

The subject shifts to Harper and Ethan, and she suggests that they don't spend as much time being physical as the other couple. Ethan returns to his room and immediately starts bouncing. Tanya describes her plan for the day to Greg - to dress up as Monica Vitti and then ride a Vespa into town and have dinner at a popular restaurant. Greg is surprisingly fit and willing to do whatever he wants. Harper finds Ethan in the room, but he's strangely reluctant to ask her to help him "finish." When she mentions the fight Daphne told her about, Ethan turns the conversation to Harper. He says he has a defensive and teasing syndrome when he feels threatened.

That's exactly what happens when Harper tries to reject the offer. Lucia and Mia stand in front of an expensive store looking at clothes. The first says that Dominic will talk to Valentina about them, soon they will have money to buy things. He goes to the manager and asks to add Lucia and Mia's names to the room when Valentina refuses to enter the hotel without official guests. Dominic allows them to buy and order things for the room, but modestly. Although Valentina is not happy about this, she does not want to hurt Dominic. When Spiller and Sullivan reunite, Cameron casually reminds Harper that he knows she doesn't love them. Harper is a bit surprised by this and goes for a swim, and Cameron joins her.

She apologizes for surprising him. But he makes her think that "it's important that he likes her." And Daphne. He says so and he definitely means something. Lucia and Mia start spending money, bragging about their room numbers. 148 wherever they go. Greg and Tanya take the Vespa, which Valentina is upset about because it means the hotel could be liable if they have an accident. Because of Tanya's weight and how tightly she clings to Greg, the ride becomes really difficult. They almost fall a few times, but they make it through the day safely. Lucia tells Mia that since Dominic is paying for her too, she will have to come with him to her room for the night.

He's reluctant, but he knows Dom has been waiting for it. He's also less than thrilled to see Giuseppe again, throwing a drink at the pianist when he asks him for his "prices." The girls go to the bar and sure enough, Giuseppe goes back to the piano. But Mia confidently approaches him and asks him to show his ability to read. Despite this embarrassment, Giuseppe sees the sincerity in her request and allows her to take over. He charms the crowd and Giuseppe with a rendition of Frank Sinatra's "The Best Things in Life Are Free." Lucia also gets emotional and hugs Mia. Portia's bad luck continues as she goes on a date with Albie, only to discover that Tanya and Greg have arrived at the same restaurant.

Portia decides to stay and not ruin another chance with Albie because of Tanya. Their conversation gets pretty heated and eventually they go in the direction of what kind of partners they want. Portia describes herself as very tender and with a traumatic past, while Albie says that he "loves wounded birds", which is a sign of his interest in her.

Sullivan and Spiller have dinner and during the conversation it is revealed that Daphne once had a baby die during childbirth. The C-section birth almost killed her too, and it brought her and Cameron really close. Harper looks jealous in front of the pair, but Ethan watches silently.

Dom has lunch with Bert, who tells him that Dom "should have been more careful with his work." It's clear that Dom knows why his wife left him (something Albie confirms with Portia in a separate conversation) and asks her to make up with him. When Greg tells Tanya that he has to return to Denver in two days the next day, he drops a bombshell. He is shocked and immediately starts insulting her in public and walks away.

Albie lets Portia out of her room and asks if he can kiss her. She says yes and agrees to another date with him. Harper apologizes to Ethan for being down on things and costing the group the trip. He promises to try harder to have a good time, but Ethan is relatively unmoved. He reads a book when he falls asleep. Daphne and Cameron call Harper a "pill", indicating that they think she's boring and that they're lucky to meet a guy with Ethan's past. Then they continue to make love.

Dom is initially reluctant to invite Lucia and Mia into the room, saying that he has to control everything and that he has a real disease of uncontrollable sexual desires. With further insistence by Lucia, she invites them in and it appears there are threesome. Tanya wakes up in the middle of the night and finds Greg talking on the phone with someone, telling them "Tanya doesn't suspect anything" and that she "loves him". He's cheating on her and probably has a wife at home too. And what will Tanya do about it?

Episode Review

Episode 2 brings more teasing drama to the couple showdown between the Sullivans and the Spillers, and more. The on/off flirtation between Harper and Cameron is the most interesting and focused aspect here.

Episode 2 established that the people in White Lotus are not what they seem at all. Everyone has layers underneath and is lost in trying to validate their insecurities depending on others. Seeing oneself through the prism of others' perceptions can always lead to frustration, and the tension builds intensely in season 2.

Many foreshadowings show how the writers cleverly frame their puzzles for the audience. Themes began to emerge that gave the exposition part of the story a real sense of relevance. Cameron vs Ethan gets "alpha-dogged"; male restraint and their cases against Dominic, Albie and Greg; and the lack of clarity about where to draw the line between friendship and infatuation between Lucia and Mia.

Season 2 is set to be enjoyed in a foreign land with foreign characters.
