The White Lotus Season 2 Episode 5 opens with a scene from Lucia and Albie's night of passion. Well, just for the last one, when he says goodbye to Lucia, he asks for money. It turned out that what we said about him was wrong. He still works like men and finds an innocent, harmless awakened lamb that he can puppeteer and manipulate.
Lucia makes up a story about Alessio that she has to pay the money she earns from clients. Albie promises to withdraw money from the bank and pay her, and they decide to see each other again later that day (or night).
"The Gays" take Tanya and Portia to Palermo. Ethan finds the wrapper Harper left in the bathroom sink and they finally talk about the night. Despite Ethan's most earnest pleas, Harper doesn't believe him. If he was really innocent, he should have told her first. But the "sibling code" has seen him keep it a secret and will now suffer from his passive-aggressive tantrums. Dominic tries to dissuade Albini from pursuing Lucia further, but the son responds with the bad examples his father has set for him.
He then tries to do the same with Lucia, who says she'll try, even though she doesn't take it for granted. Mia pursues Valentina to temporarily replace Giuseppe at the piano, but she flatly refuses. On the way out, Albie runs into Portia and they wish each other a wonderful life, ending things on a good note.
Valentina is in love with Isabella, and to separate her from him, Valentina puts her in a beach club and replaces her with the obnoxious Salvatore. Although Isabella is disappointed, she doesn't know the real reason behind it.
The Sullivans and Spillers arrive at Etna to explore the wineries. A visibly angry Harper steps aside during the wine tasting and opens the floor with intimate questions about Ethan and Cam's college experiences. He asks Cameron and Ethan if they ever slept with the same woman or shared any other wild stories. Ethan is embarrassed by Harper's inquisition and Cam gets a clue. In addition, Cameron is also implied to go after girls Ethan likes and go ahead of him to sleep with them.
Ethan explains with absolute clarity behind this - the mimetic desire that Cam sees himself as a lower species than Ethan. Jack and Portia get close on the boat, making Tanya jealous. But when he gets to Palermo, he is relieved and says that at least the "gays" don't want his money. Quentin says they're going to the opera that night, making an interesting change to Tanya's general schedule. Lucia tries to woo Albie by saying that she won't sleep with him just for money and that she likes him. Dom takes a walk on the beach and reminisces about the past and watches young mothers and fathers enjoying family time with their children.
Jack and Portia stroll through town while "The Gays" and Tanya attend the opera. The former couple are moved by the performance and tearfully look at each other in a profound moment. "Madame Butterfly" impressed the group. At the opera, Tanya wondered if the woman sitting next to them in the row was the Queen of Sicily and was playing a practical joke that Quentin didn't know about her. Lucia confronts Cam about the money at dinner and Albie notices. Once again, she falls in love with the "sad bird" who offers to help her. Bert tries to open his eyes as Dom brings up Albie and Lucia. In Dom's inquisitions, we learn that Bert and his wife are not on good terms.
Their marriage fell apart because Dom and everyone else knew about Bert's extramarital affairs. Dom tries to deny it, but says he's delusional if he believes anything else is true. The couples sit around the table and Cam tries to touch Harper's thighs, which shows her desire.
At first he doesn't pull her hand and looks at her, but eventually he does, showing his indecision about the situation. Mia once again begs Valentina to let her play, but this time she offers her "time" for Valentina and tells her that she knows Valentina is gay. Looking at Mia with shocked and tight eyes, the manager allows Mia to play the two nights that Giuseppe will be out.
Portia and Jack run out of the restaurant without paying, wondering if it was on purpose or if something went wrong. Harper tears up when she talks about her last night with Daphne, but like before, she tries to sweep it under the rug and in a weird moment describes her "handsome coach" but shows Harper a picture of her kids.
Are the kids not Cam's? Was this the point of this scene and was Daphne subconsciously trying to tell Harper? You can't tell at this point. Lucia is threatened in town by a man she describes as Alessio. Albie is there for her and cares for her.
He talks about how Quentin admired the beauty and inherited the villa from his father with Tanya. Harper and Cam look at each other in front of the couples. And now it's clear that Daphne isn't going to do anything about it. But Ethan will, and he's watching Kem intently. Dom tries to call his wife, Abby, but she doesn't pick up the phone.
Albie and Lucia spend the night together, but her feelings about the situation are clear. Tanya wakes up in the middle of the night and watches in horror to find Jack and Quentin having sex. The horror comes from the fact that the latter introduces him as his nephew.
Episode Review
Well, well, well, what did the cat pull out of the hat this time! Episode 5 is arguably the best episode of the series and embodies its thematic core – the dark world of human evil. The highlight of the episode was that the man's thirst for "more" was never satiated. Even the innocent are unwittingly drawn into the deception.
There are so many new endings for the finale that it can't come any faster. These storylines need a quick resolution and we can't wait to see how it ends. Some shocking things happen in the episode. Cam's attempt at "alpha dog" Ethan was something we discussed in our review of the second episode, and it comes true. Ethan explained it as mimetic desire and may have had enough of his friend's babbling.
Don't be surprised if one of the bodies is Cam. Because Ethan isn't going to sit still this time as Cam advances on Harper. The terrible truth about Daphne's family will need more explaining, but what it really means is epic. Sometimes you feel for these women. Both suffer from emotionally unavailable men, but one seems worse than the other. Both are failed marriages and sometimes you just wish either of them could show the ladies some love. Hold their hands, pay attention to them, and show them some loyalty.
But unfortunately, none of these will happen. Old habits die hard. Lucia felt saved in the eyes of God when she received the "new fish". How futile to think she might actually change... Also, we didn't get much clarity from Lucia's point of view this episode. Who is Alessio? Is it even real? Is Lucia really telling the truth? its dynamics just became interesting. Albie's "white knight syndrome" will come to life as he takes action after trying to "save" him.
The latter was hailed as "too old for school" and a fancy operator, but Dom opened a can of worms. The whole exchange between them and Albie showed the difference between traditional and new age ideas about the other sex and morality. In this respect they were right, but we don't see it because we are busy demonizing this way of thinking with polemical modern conventions. But there are also generational problems like sweeping things under the carpet and cheating, which bothers the older generations.
How the tale changed for Quentin and Tanya! This wild ending suggests that there is a bigger plot behind the scenes and that Portia and Tanya may be in danger. A lot of red flags came up in this episode — Quentin asking for subsidies, Jack forgetting his wallet, and of course, the ending in bed — an unfortunate nod to that notion. It was an abrupt tonal change, but it sets things up nicely for the finale.
Favorite bits from this episode include Bert's inability to convince himself of his happy marriage; and Valentina struggles with her compulsions when Mia proposes to her. The beautiful interludes between the tidal waves hitting the rocks and the overwhelming passion and desire for the characters added to the charm. They are performed in a melodious and methodical manner to make it inspiring for the audience. The prompt loading on the "condom situation" was also a great touch.
A great finale awaits us and HBO, you did not disappoint us again. Can you ever? Can you even do that? How the story changed for Quentin and Tanya!
